Schools are facing unprecedented head lice outbreaks

The UK is facing a big rise in the number of head lice outbreaks as a result of a change in NHS England’s guidance on prescribing treatments. Rolled out over the summer, it means GPs are now prevented from prescribing any treatment for head lice.
This means head lice are going to become more prevalent in schools as the new policy takes effect. Not everyone can afford to buy head lice treatments, and there is increasing evidence that they no longer work as effectively as they used to. A US study found 98% of head lice had developed resistance to most over the counter remedies. It’s estimated that nearly half of children have been infested with head lice in the past five years, significantly more than the 2% to 8% estimated to have had nits in the past.
GPs would normally prescribe hundreds of it’s Bug Buster kits at this time of year, when children are going back to school after the summer holidays. The kits cost the NHS £4.92 each and can be used for up to a year. Clinical trials found them to be up to four times more effective than over the counter treatments. Since the new guidance came into force prescriptions for the Bug Buster kits have fallen by 90%.
Schools are already being inundated with head lice, and teachers are worried they will see more frequent infestations this year. It will be the children from low-income families who will suffer the most. If they can’t get free prescriptions from their GP, they will struggle to treat their children, and schools will have to deal with further outbreaks.
Over the counter treatments can cost up to £14 for a single application for one person. Treating a whole family can cost a small fortune, are not guaranteed to solve the problem, and often need to be used repeatedly.

“As for the nit stuff I cannot recommend enough to all you mummys having trouble with bugs. My other little girl seems to attract them no matter what and we have been fighting a losing battle with head lice since she started school but my itchy kid deffo works. We used the shampoo and spray every day for a week while she had them and now use once a week and what do u know for the 1st time in a long time not a nit or egg in sight. I will always use this now for my 4 kids what a godsend so easy to use and no nasty smells like most nit lotion you buy. It smells lovely and leaves the hair looking nice a shiny. I deffo recommend my itch kid to everyone.”
